| Booth space at expo sells out Sat, 03 May 2008 04:59:00 EST CEDAR CITY - The booth spaces for next weekend's Cedar City Business Expo sold out this week, mostly because of local businesses, and organizers say it is an encouraging sign for the area's economy. The expo, scheduled for May 9 and 10 on the Southern Utah University campus, is organized by the Cedar City Area Chamber of Commerce. It will bring more than 80 companies from all varieties of businesses together under the same roof. Despite recent national trends that show a struggling economy, events like the expo show that local businesses are still looking forward and being active, said Bryan Dangerfield, Cedar City's economic development director. Dangerfield said the expo is a good example of the way local businesses communicate and work together, something that encourages new companies to become a part of the community. "Businesses, coming into a rural community, are pleasantly surprised that a lot of their needs can be taken care of locally," he said. This year's event will differ from those in years previous in several ways, said Chris McCormick, event director. Typically held during the week, the expo has been moved to the weekend to attract more people, McCormick said, and vendors will be allowed to sell their wares for the first time. "We kind of got a hold of some of the businesses that were part of last year's expo and asked them what they thought worked and what didn't; what they liked and what they didn't like," he said. In addition, McCormick said there would be more for visitors to do, including live music and dancing, children's entertainment and a series of workshops on topics ranging from safety to buying a home for the first time. "Especially with the way things are right now, with the mortgage crisis, people are wondering how to do that," he said. The event is free and visitors are encouraged to participate in free drawings for door prizes. |
